PC First Aid

  • Try booting the computer in ‘Safe Mode’ (as soon as you turn the computer on, repeatedly press F5, Windows Vista users will be shown a menu – to use ‘Safe Mode’ they will need to press F8.

  • Try Restarting the computer.
  • Try booting the computer in ‘Safe mode’ (as above).
  • Check the connection between your computer and your monitor.
  • If you are using a laptop try moving the screen backwards and forward.

  • Make sure your speakers/headphones are plugged into the correct port (usually pale green).
  • Make sure there isn’t a problem with your speakers – try plugging them into an MP3 player instead.
  • Try using headphones instead of speakers to see if you can hear any sound.
  • Check the volume settings in Windows.
  • Check the volume settings in the program you are using to play the sound.
  • If you have a laptop, you may find that there is a separate volume control on the case of the laptop.

  • Are you getting an error message saying ‘Limited or no Connectivity’? If so right click on the message icon and click ‘repair’.
  • Make sure your Username and Password are correct.
  • Try turning your modem/router off for a minute and then switching it back on, wait another minute to allow it to connect and setup and try again.
  • If you are using dial-up, try removing any telephones and fax machines from the line.
  • Try contacting you ISP (internet service provider) to see if it is a problem with their systems/service.

  • Try playing or burning different brands of CD’s or DVD’s.
  • Try different software to burn/play the CD’s or DVD’s.
  • Make sure the disks are clean.
  • If the CD/DVD drawer wont open, straighten a paperclip and push it into the small hole on the front of the drive, this will open the draw manually.
